url.fibiger.org is/was built as a tinyurl clone written in php that doesn't require a database so it could be installed on a minimal hosting solution. It was free and the source was released, and I also ran an install so people could test it out. After a while it sort of disappeared off my radar, and managed to continue to get a fair amount of use. Unbeknownst to me, spammers started using it to obfuscate urls, much like they might use tinyurl or any other shortening service. If you google url.fibiger.org, you'll find tons of blog spam and other nasty stuff, which I am truly bummed about. I've removed the software running on my site, at least until I can recode it and add some anti-spam and security code. If you have any interest in running it personally, the source code is still available.
